Arctic Oil Spill Research and Development Initiative

Enhancing International Cooperation on Oil Spill R&D

EPPR recognized the need for increased international cooperation and collaboration on oil spill research and development activities in the Arctic and other cold water environments. After additional discussion and planning, and two successful workshops in the United States and Norway, the Arctic Oil Spill Research and Development Initiative was born.

The purpose of the Oil Spill R&D Initiative is to build on existing partnerships and seek to fill a unique role that results in improved operational spill response in the Arctic and other cold-water and ice-covered environments. The initiative focuses on the following priority areas:

  • Applied science and the translation of research into positive operational outcomes
  • Opportunities for sharing and collaboration amongst oil spill researchers including a biennial workshop
  • Integration of Indigenous, traditional, and local knowledge with academic and institutional science and knowledge

Work conducted by the Oil Spill R&D Initiative is guided by the Leadership Team co-led by Canada, Norway, and the United States.
